Unity panel loses shadow after login

Bug Description
Maybe this has already been reported. I did not come up with it during a search.
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Linux kernel 3.5.0-22
unity 5.18.0-0ubuntu2
A few seconds after logon to unity desktop, the unity panel's shadow disappears. and so does the "Ubuntu Desktop" labe;. I click on the desktop and both reappear. It behaves like hitting "Alt-F!" but without highlighting the dash BFB.
