Thanks for your prompt reply.Deletion of the default file was refused until I rebooted and CHKDSK cleared a number of faulty files and indexes including the default file. Then uninstalled Ubuntu successfully and used Wubi r129 [r130 is not available on the download site] to reinstal. No joy, I'm afraid. Installation stalled at the exact same place i.e. when copying installation logs. Again, Ubuntu refused to uninstal and used CHQDSK to delete faulty files. Ubuntu is now uninstalled. If it's any help I am attaching the log file for Wubi r129.
This might not be relevant but I have been seeing problems with Windows XP recently i.e slow start ups, failure to shut down, sluggish performance etc. A comprehensive virus scan picked off a Trojan. Windows performance slightly better and tried reinstalling Ubuntu. No joy still. Same problem.
