Can you run zim with the "--debug" switch (will need to use commandline or
a .bat file) and check "$TM%/zim.log" to see what is happening?

Thanks,

Jaap

Hi Jaap,

I had to roll back to 0.60 for my Wiki. I will set up a test VM over
the weekend and do a new 0.61 install there and try the debug run. I
will let you know the results afterwards.

Hi Jaap,

I did some tests and the results are inconclusive. My test VM is a
Windows 7 Ultimate. First I tried a fresh install of 0.61 and that ran
without problems. Then I simulated an upgrade from 0.60 and 0.61 and
the problem re-occurred, however only twice. When I tried to start Zim
in debug mode, the problem did not occur anymore and any subsequent
starts went fine also.

I do not have my office laptop at hand at the moment to try there
again but will do so next week and see if I can reproduce it there.
Could it be linked to the upgrade process?

Where can I find the debug log by the way?
I noticed the source view plugin is not part of the Windows package?

PS: on my linux machines, the new version runs fine (except for the
source view plugin, I will log a new bug for that)

Hallo Patrick,

Not sure why upgrade shows issue. Might be some lag in cleaning up the
socket used for the background process. I have used versions interchanged
last month on my windows laptop (windows 7) and have not found such an
issue myself.

Jaap

Hi Jaap,

I think it might be related to the local setup on the laptop. It is a
laptop I have to use when working for my client and it has all sorts
of policies on it. Zim (0.6O) also has a very strange startup
behaviour on it. I usually have to click a few times on the Zim icon
and then wait for 2,3 minutes before the Zim screen actually appears.
In the task manager I can see several Zim processes starting and
running together for a wile and then some of them die and only 3
remain (I think). Anyway, I will stick with 0.60 as long as I have
that laptop. At home I am a 100% Linux user and Zim works just fine
there.

Btw, did you receive my donation? Kudos for your good work :)

Regards,

Hey Patrick,

Yes, I have received the donation, many thanks.

What you might want to try on the client's laptop setup is to run zim with
the "--standalone" option. (Create a .bat file on windows to start zim with
commandline switches easily.) This will prevent zim from running a
background process and opening sockets for process communication.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Jaap

Hi Jaap,

Thanks! That seems to do the trick. With --standalone Zim starts in
seconds and now also 0.61 works fine.
