Same here 4.10.0-40-generic
In case it helps, xinput identifies the trackpad "ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse" but when resumes from suspension the malfunctioning trackpad is identified as "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint". If I reload psmouse, as suggested, it gets back to "ImExPS/2" and works properly most times. But if too many events arrive from the trackball at some point X get messy, and even if you reload psmouse X do not respond to keyboard or mouse events and the screen freezes.
