IIRC, the reason why ~/snap was chosen was precisely to pass "the grandmother test" since a snap's data is typically stored in ~/snap/<name>/.... Putting those files in a hidden directory (eg ~/.snap/<name>/...) means that "Grandma" may not be able to find as easily the document she just created.
That said, I see no reason why this cannot be revisited on the mailing list as Mark suggested.
