That's basically the way that applets are rendered in Awn.

What is the middle applet?

Does the middle applet stay looking like that white box, even after everything else is loaded?

Actually it's the Desktop switcher (with effects), the white square
disappears after the loading. But at every refresh of one applet, all the
applets becomes white again a few seconds.

by the way, the desktop switcher is great but you should give it a different
X11 widow type (or class, don't know ?) because in compiz, the dialog
window (with all the previews of desktops) loads with Nomal windows effects.

Well, good luck for the future, it's rocks ;)

I'm wondering what your system specs are?

Processor and Video Card, video drivers and Desktop Environment (gnome, xfce).

the lines on startup are normal

But I am interested in:
"the white square

applets becomes white again a few seconds."

Some systems definitely see this effect to varying degrees but for "a few seconds" seems a bit excessive. Also which desktop switcher are you using (there are 3).

Ok, i'm running an Nvidia Geforce 4 MX graphic card with nivida drivers,
plus a AMD athlon XP processor.
Gnome 2.20.1 + Compiz. 0.6.1
And the desktop switcher with effect : BlingSwitcher

The apps lauchers don't do the bug, it's all by the applets. When i change
of desktop, the windows list refresh : while a half second, some icons
become white (particulary for the weather applet, the showDesktop one and
the changeDesktop applet.).

It's not regulary, but it's there.

Good luck :)

oh by the way I think you should disable animations (open, slide of icons)
at startup of the dock, there's some things that make my icons moving and
i'm laggy at startup :p

Hmm, sounds like a driver issue the white square is present during repaints normally points to something on the graphics card). I'm not sure what we can do for this, other than trying to make sure we aren't unnecessarily causing repaints (although thats hard enough). I'm keeping this open as it may be fixed in 0.3 (as the drawing is slightly different).

This 'white box' issue will hopefully be fixed over the next few releases, as the drawing in Awn get's an overhaul. Targetting for 0.2.8;

I now use awn-bzr from launchpad repository, version 0.3.1. This ugly bug steel appends. I think we can rely it to https://bugs.launchpad.net/awn/+bug/236542

Goog luck again.

I have that strange repoainting issue, too, since I upgraded to Ubuntu Intrepid. I am (and was) using the latest AWN version from bazaar, but now some applets appear white whenever the dock is repainted (e.g. a new application is loaded and displayed).

Funnily it seems that especially the spacer applet is affected by this, but it also happens with the shiny desktop switcher.

It's possible that this is a driver issue (NVIDIA), but since everything changed due to the distribution upgrade I don't really know where to look.

This seems to have vastly improved in the latest revisions. Now there is only a white backrgound during the initilaization of an applet. Still something that should be improved for a final stable release, but it's much more pleasant to work with AWN now..

Hi guys, I had the exact problem recently (not from the beginning), and I'm using the PPA bzr version (latest).

After some trials, I guess I found out the reason of the problem; Try to have only 3 applets (2 + the Launcher/Task Manager applet) running and the WHITE SQUARES ARE GONE! It ran like a charm! Can anyone explain?? Whenever I add any other applet (haven't tested them all of course) such as the File Browser applet, the PyNot applet or the MiMenu applet, the WHITE SQUARE RETURNS BACK :S!!

I had the following applets running:

1) Quit-Logoff applet
2) Volume Control applet
3) Launcher/Task Manager applet

Please Help!

Another BTW, the white squares occurred only to the applets, not the running windows in the Launcher/Task Manager applet!

This problem will almost certainly not receive any fixes in the 0.3.x series. The recent 0.3.2 release is slated to be the final one before 0.4 series. Version 0.4+ will almost certainly fully resolve this issue.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Just use the Awn Manager move the "Launcher/TaskManager" applet to be the first applet on the right side as in the attached screenshot, ENJOY =D, please feedback the results, thanks!

Well, it did solve all my problems till now! I added the awn-terminal, menu, and notification area applets and they worked perfectly, maybe I should test all applets and give feedback here. BTW, did you putting the taskmanager applet on the right or in other words put all applets on the left of it? What were your results? I guess we have to discuss this here so that the developers can easily resolve this bug, thanks.

Please note that moving the taskmanager to the right can help
significantly, however, don't expect that it will fully resolve the
issue in all cases.

Like I say it will help a lot but it does not solve the fundamental problem. The more static the layout to the left the less often you will see it.

The cause of this behaviour is relatively well understood at this point. It was decided that attempting to fix it for the 0.3.2 release would be overly invasive.

The 0.4 rewrite branch is more or less free of this as the fix (setting a transparent pixmap on the windows) was implemented a few weeks ago. Till 0.4 I'd suggest going with the taskmanager on the right if you can tolerate it in that location :-)
