Bug Description

upon attempting to install Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 Beta the installed fails and puts be at a terminal prompt.
this is, i believe becaus eof my dell bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
if the bluetooth mouse and keyboard are not active (hitting the buttons on the keybaord or wiggling the mouse to wake it up and become active) then the Live CD will simply fail and put me at a terminal prompt. i can only reboot
if i do activate the mouse and keyboard, the Live CD will take me to the desktop but i have no mouse and keybaord functionality, no matter what i do.
again this is with a dell bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
this keyboard and mouse is a legacy type device outside of an operating system,. meaning it will operate in DOS.

using the installer, the same thing happens if i do not wake up the mouse and keybaord.

if i do wake them up i am presented, SOMETIMES, with the installer but again i have no keyboard or mouse functionality so i can not install Ubuntu.

i am pretty shocked at this considering the BT mouse and kb are a legacy recognized device.

system spec's

Intel Core2Quad Q9650
DFI P45 JR T2RS mATX board
(Intel P45 chipset and ICH10/ICH10R southbridge)
Nvidia 8800 GTX
no sound card or onboard currently
all USB devices unplugged except the mouse and keyboard.

SATA controller set to IDE and LEgacy Enabled. have tried disabling legacy mode and the same issue happens.

Dan,

yes this issue persists.
i believe it has something to do with the USB activation within the kernel and driver loading sequence of the LiveCD or installation.
i rarely am able to make the bluetooth mouse and keyboard work and pretty much gave up on trying.
Sometimes I can make the lights come on denoting that it has paired up with the bluetooth dongle but nothing works after that
one odd thing is that i have a standard 2.4ghz (non bluetooth) keyboard with integrated touchpad and that works perfectly fine no matter what machine i use it on.
I am not sure if it is the particular board i am using - DFI X48 T2RSB Plus, or if it is something else.

I've been having a possibly related issue with the same keyboard/mouse combo. Have you tried unplugging the dongle and then plugging it back in? While awkward, this works for me. I can't figure out why this is happening, but I think it has to do with whether the dongle is in Bluetooth adaptor mode or (as you call it) 'legacy' mode. I think plugging it back in after boot triggers this legacy mode, as it doesn't show up under the bluetooth menu. This is actually the desired behaviour for me, since I triple-boot the system and re-pairing bluetooth every boot is not a fun time.

dmesg seems to agree, as the dongle seems to show up as a USB hub with a keyboard and a mouse attached (see attached).

I've been having a possibly related issue with the same keyboard/mouse
combo. Have you tried unplugging the dongle and then plugging it back
in? While awkward, this works for me. I can't figure out why this is
happening, but I think it has to do with whether the dongle is in
Bluetooth adaptor mode or (as you call it) 'legacy' mode. I think
plugging it back in after boot triggers this legacy mode, as it doesn't

for me, since I triple-boot the system and re-pairing bluetooth every

At the login screen. Usually right after trying to type in my username
because I've forgotten about this bug.

As an aside, I just upgraded this box to Jaunty and it appears that
doing this causes the gdm to (recoverably) crash. But that's a
seperate bug.

See that’s the whole problem for me, I can't even install the OS to my system if I use the dongle. It's rather strange, I do recall once getting it going but once the OS loaded I lost it. But any other time the installer usually crashes (so to speak) as it cannot deal with the dongle as it should.

This is all strange given the fact that the dongle is not even seen as a Bluetooth device, just a usb device.

I currently am not running ubuntu on this particular system so next time I attempt it I will keep in mind the unplugging of the dongle and see if I works.
