the man page for esd only lists the following in the FILES section
/etc/esound/esd.conf daemon configuration file
and makes no reference to ~/.esd.conf and therefore no mention of the
order which the files are parsed, nor when they are parsed (which is not
obvious with esd).
i suggest that the FILES section be changed to
FILES
esd will read configuration files in the following order upon a
spawn request: ~/.esd.conf, then /etc/esound/esd.conf. These files will
not be parsed if the user starts the daemon on the command line. Please
see esd.conf(5) for the options and formatting of these files.
a large chunk of the text in the man page for esd could then be moved
into a seperate esd.conf(5) man page
