I have the same problem here :

jlarsj@jlarsjlinux:~$ lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Madison [Radeon HD 5000M Series]

Unity won't load with fglrx proprietary drivers installed, whatever the procedure I'm using.
