The reason the binary plugin is needed is for the scanning feature (xsane) for the HP Laserjet M1522NF. If users don't install the binary plugin, they then lack scanning.

I have just tried upgrading to =net-print/hplip-3.12.10a and I still get this segfault on my 32bit platform.

I do have a 64bit platform with hplip compiled with "-static-libs" and "+qt" USE flags and xsane does not segfault. My guess, either static-libs is the issue or the qt USE flag now must be required to avert this segfault.

Personally, I thought my strace & gdb logs pin-pointed this issue pretty well. They're posted to "http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423599"
