I know thus I do not buy printers requiring a binary plugin as they just cause headaches.

So hplip works fine on 32bit but segfaults on 64bit? You say you have the "-static-libs" and "+qt" use flag set. Is this only true for the 64bit version. To exclude the influence of different use flag combinations you should try if both amd64 and x86 fail and work with the same combinations.

I can not do anything about the segfault. This is up to the hplip developers especially if binary plugins are included.
