Okay I thought you did rebuild cups. According the last line of the hplip section in the gentoo printing howto users are advised to to remove all printer queues and reconfigure them after upgrading hplip.

I did not know there is already a wiki page for hplip.

This shouldn't be necessary if users are following the printing guide. I will also add these instructions to the wiki page including other modifications.
