It looks like the issue appears in the hpaio backend. Please refer to the above linked report to let us know if we can supply any additional information or help! I can reliably reproduce the crash using the code sample in the bug description. Additionally, taking the sane_init() and sane_exit() out of the thread and into main() prevents the crash. Disabling the hpaio backend prevents the crash.
