Testing on Ubuntu 11.04 just showed me that the trunk patched version, as well as 0.48.1 (packaged) and the branch (0.48.4) patch version all fail with the following message:

(inkscape:12819): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_is_local: assertion `uri != NULL' failed
** (inkscape:12819): WARNING **: URI non valide
** (inkscape:12819): WARNING **: Error: Could not open file 'http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/svglogo.svg' with VFS

Could someone with any GNU/Linux distro confirm?
