unfortunately, this is a global OSX/X11 problem. The alt key
on a mac keyboard is normally set by SHIFT+option (because
the alt is on the top of the key) but this does not work
under X11. I have not found a workaround though medling with
the keymaps in X11 should help to solve the problem.
