Unfortunately, Halley, trackalt=1 does not seem to help here (OS X 10.5 i386, X11.app from Xquartz). When I push the alt (Opt) key, the status bar text changes to indicate the alt-click, alt-drag action available, but any subsequent modified keypress gets treated like a normal keypress.
