Hey! Installed XQuartz 2.6.1 (on Snow Leopard 10.6.6), logged out&in, opened Inkscape, set the option key preference in XQuartz (X11 on menu line) preferences, alt-key kerning works again!

No need to manually edit .Xmodmap :)
