You are right that this has nothing to do with your video drivers.

I marked this bug a duplicate of bug 168648, since it is closely related. Others over there are now seeing the same problem with maximization. That bug is now marked high priority and has been assigned to a developer, so there' s a good chance it will get fixed soon. Also note that there's a workaround: if you temporarily hide the 'toolbox' (View->show/hide->Toolbox), you should be able to maximize again...
