Just to add a point about ligatures, using libertine font with the:
svg text bellow I have a good display in firefox but no in Inkscape.
Cairo manage internally the text-rendering property but no Inkscape.
Adding this point in Inkscape will be a great improvement for ligatures.
By the way I think that Cairo is not currently abble to display all ligatures as ct et st ones.
