More precisely the problem is:
When you create a text object, add a gradient to it and then edit the text; the gradient's start- and endpoints will stay where they are.
The same principle applies to non-text-objects:
Create an object (e.g. a rectangle), go into edit mode and move control-points/nodes around and you will see the gradient doesn't resize to the new width/height.
This still happens to me on Gentoo 64 bit with Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939.
I guess for regular objects this wouldn't necessarily qualify as bug, but at least for text objects it would seem reasonable the let the gradient grow with the text.
