.VOB files are simple MPEG files, that usually belong to a DVD but I don't think it would be good to assume that all folders with .VOB files in should be treated as a backed up DVD. That's where the VIDEO_TS folder comes in.

About the movies you're not seeing, do the .avis show up as movies, maybe? Maybe as TV Shows?

Better recognition is definitely in order, it's a big item in our ToDo list.
