@Mark: Typically, modern would be the approach that is different from what people are used to.
Then, the γ (gamma) in Ubuntu Font is indeed modern.

There was a similar situation for Greek when the default Ubuntu font was changed from Bitstream Vera to DejaVu. The weird character at that time was the Greek 'ν' (for 'n'). There were some complaints but people eventually got used to it and the glyph remained as is.
