I'm the founder of Jalbum (http://jalbum.net/software). We've finally adopted our web photo album software for Ubuntu 9.10 and packaged it as a .deb package at http://jalbum.net/download/8.6/Linux/NoVM/jalbum_8.6.1_all.deb.

Jalbum is true freeware*, no crippleware and Jalbum is partly open source - generic code under LGPL but still some core code still not opened (but planned to). We have an engaged open source community around us that helps supporting and extending the product. Jalbum has also been translated to 32 languages by our users.

Jalbum is very popular on Windows and Mac with over 5 million downloads and over 26 million published web albums to servers all over the world. Now we want to give Ubuntu users a smooth experience installing and running Jalbum too! We figure, getting into "Ubuntu Software Center" is the ideal path, hence this "needs-packaging" bug report. I gather we should apply to get into the "Universe" component with Jalbum.

Two things sets Jalbum apart from other tools and services for web photo albums:
* Albums can be hosted on any web server
* Albums can have any look and feel and behavior. This is all determined by plugins to Jalbum we call "skins": http://jalbum.net/skins. Jalbum skins are developed by our users in a true open source spirit! (http://jalbum.net/developer)

Jalbum needs Sun's Java 5 or Java 6 to execute.

Footnote: We make revenue from running a hosting service for albums, but there is no requirement to host Jalbum albums with us.
