The part above that says 'Soundcard not detected.' was already in the report as I progressed through, following the steps. It is the first time I have used this; I presumed it was meant to be there.
I later tried 'sudo aplay -l' in terminal and it told me what it found - which is what is reported further down the list above.
Afterwards I found I could get sound out of a set of USB speakers by changing output devices in the Sound Preferences.
Still no sound from line-out speakers.

Please try updating your alsa drivers, as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules. Please report back as to whether this helps solve your issue.

The problem has been resolved with the solution offered to me - thanks very much Luke.
My apologies for the long delay after your prompt response - a number of impediments to getting back to work on it, and then an ethernet card failure while in the middle of updating Ubuntu! All seems to be working fine again now and, most importantly, I now have sound from my normal plug-in speakers!
The instructions for updating the audio drivers were very clear and easy to follow; I had no difficulties with that at all.
Thanks again,
all the best,

Bryce
