The problem has been resolved with the solution offered to me - thanks very much Luke.
My apologies for the long delay after your prompt response - a number of impediments to getting back to work on it, and then an ethernet card failure while in the middle of updating Ubuntu! All seems to be working fine again now and, most importantly, I now have sound from my normal plug-in speakers!
The instructions for updating the audio drivers were very clear and easy to follow; I had no difficulties with that at all.
