OK, I am getting past the login screen, no spinning wheel anymore, however it still doesn't work. I've tried #39. The symptom is that after login, the desktop immediately logs me out again and I get back to the login screen.

I managed to login if I manually mounted the /home/users directory containing the home directories. So I suppose this error appears to be some interplay issue between autofs-ldap and ldap logins on an LTSP server?
