This is still a problem as of 0.2.3dbs-65ubuntu. Debian's version apparently still has the same problem, while the inability to load any font wider than 8 pixels has been long-since fixed in kbd.

Here's how I triggered the bug just now: ctrl-alt-F1 to open the console, type
$ consolechars -f /usr/share/consolefonts/Lat15-Terminus24x12.psf.gz Cannot (yet) load a non-seekable RAW file read_simple_font(): Invalid argument
Same happens with other Terminus fonts wider than 8 pixels. I don't currently have any wide non-Terminus console fonts.
