daspooky, thanks for the workaround (#12). The "Hidden" status displays the "Busy" icon in the panel. Empathy v. 2.28.x/Karmic 9.10.

Available => green round
Busy => yellow round
Away => red triangle
Hidden => yellow round (busy icon)
