I am not sure if this is still an issue but initially it seemed the technical issues involved were that there was no way to get back to the browser from the helper application. How about a different approach? I propose no UI but rather only have an option in about:config.
I am not sure of the correct section but something like:
browser.display_alltext_as_plain
default would be FALSE and exhibit current behavior but if changed to TRUE the browser just treats it as text/plain and never takes the external handler path.
