In XsessionErrors.txt:
   (gnome-appearance-properties:14335): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_sync: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed
looks like the problematic line.

This could be due to the machine going into a power-saving mode.
