Same issue here (Feisty Fawn), I loose the correct UUID every time grub updates the menu.lst file. This was triggered after I replaced the system disk with another disk... ever since I get into problem with the menu.lst file.
I do not understand the Problem solved quote above, but then again it may be due to my knowlege (or lack of knowlege :) from how grub works. I thing I need to make grub understand what the default value (UUID) should be.
