Bug Description

I have a canon selphy CP720 and it detected and installs a driver, but it doesn't print
In ubuntu 8.04 the printer doesn't even look like it going to print, in Ubuntu 8.10 the paper makes 1 of 4 passes needed to complete a print and then stops. This has been confirmed on numerous threads.

I can confirm this. Tested on 8.10 64bit ubuntu and 8.04 32bit xubuntu with canon selphy cp720 (with recommended driver). On both machines printer makes one pass and then hangs, I can't see anything (yet) on the photopaper.

Oops, I made a mistake. I did not test on 8.10 (got it confused with some other testing), only on 8.04. Really sorry about that.

I don't have that printer anymore so I can't test; but it could be interesting if someone could check functionality on 8.10 as I can see that 8.10 has a gutenprint driver that is more up to date.

Current version is 5.2.3 <--http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

I can still confirm that the canon selphy cp720 does not print with hardy.

Everyone who has this printer please either upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 or test the newer gutenprint 5.2.2 package from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gutenprint if you are using Ubuntu 8.04 or Ubuntu 8.10.

If you still experience problems with the newer gutenprint please provide your cups error_log as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#cupserrorlog

If you are using Ubuntu 9.04 please open a terminal and run the following command as it will automatically gather useful debugging information:
apport-collect 292016

For Ubuntu 8.04, please attach the output of the printingbuginfo script https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript to this bug report.

Thanks!

As you can see by my entries above I have executed apport-collect after having a couple of attempts printing with the Canon Selphy CP720 on a Jaunty machine.
As a side note it makes only one pass through the printer and stalls there (with a white piece of paper hanging out of the printer), after a while the "print status" reports it is done printing.

I have not attempted running this printer on Hardy with the gutenprint 5.2.2 deb as I concluded: if it doesn't work in Jaunty with gutenprint 5.2.3 it won't work on Hardy with gutenprint 5.2.2. I am a little hesitant at installing third party deb files (although they seem trustworthy) on a (company) machine I do not own. If the 5.2.3 drivers would have worked on Jaunty I would have tried 5.2.2 on Hardy (but alas they didn't). I will experiment on Hardy if more information becomes available.

Hope the information I provided is useful, and please inform me if and how I can be of further assistance.

http://www.openprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gutenprint is updated to 5.2.3 now, but the probablility is low that you get the printer to work with it if you have already tested a newer Ubuntu version which comes already with Gutenprint 5.2.3.

The job is passing through all filters without any errors. So it seems that the problem is the driver, sending a data stream which the printer does not understand completely (probably working with a similar model). Nevertheless check whether you have selected the correct paper size ("Postcard" and "4x6 Photo" are not exactly the same).

Please report this bug upstream on http://gutenprint.sf.net/ with a link to this bug report.

I tried various paper sizes (as well as a custom size) on Jaunty and Hardy and they all fail, with making just one pass through the printer and leaving the white paper sticking out.

Is this still an issue with a supported release (with newer gutenprint)?

I can confirm it's not working on Ubuntu 12.04.

It also doesn't work on MacOSX 10.7 with the Gutenprint driver. Canon do not supply a driver anymore for OSX.

Same issue for me with 12.04 and Selphy CP750. However, came across this thread (link below) on the Ubuntu forums which suggests installing the CP520 driver instead works fine. I have done this and the printer works.
