I also have this problem. The keyboard and mouse work properly until X starts, then this is found in the log:
[ 424.382322] hald[3985]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000435b05 sp 00007fffc3760990 error 4 in hald[400000+57000]
Also i get the message: Internal Error, Failed to initialize HAL! at the beginning of the startup, which would make sense, if hald has segfaulted as X is starting.
