OK, seems that I have mixed up things a bit or the behavior is not 100% reproducible. Actually, it looks like the following:

- the headset mic is recognized fine when connected to the docking station headset jack
- when connecting to the notebook's internal headset jack, I need to do the above trick (regardless if the notebook is docked or undocked)
