After searching for a while, it seems it is related to the file system...
I found some interesting piece of information on http://www.piware.de/2010/09/postgresql-9-0-final-released/ : so I changed some "wal" configuration in postgresql.conf (uncommented wal_sync_method, wal_buffers and wal_writer_delay), and then "/etc/init.d/postgresql start" worked !
Limited workaround since I do not know what this changes, but it is enough for my little tests on my live ubuntu usb key.
