I have the same problem. It happens on a CIFS share, after a recent Ubuntu kernel upgrade.
I also noticed, if I run xdvi on a file existing in the current directory
xdvi example.dvi
it will say
"xvdi.bin: Fatal error: example.dvi: Is a directory."
but "example.dvi" is a file.
