Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 (20070221) with Mercury MTS 4.01b on Win XP SP2, No extensions except Talkback.

Definitely downloads attachments as soon as the mail is accessed, and won't display anything until the whole thing has been downloaded. Doesn't make any difference whether the message is viewed in the preview pane or opened in a new window. Monitoring network traffic confirms that there is no new traffic when opening the attachments, ie, they have been downloaded already.

Very large or multiple attachments are impossible to access or detach - for example, with 8 x 1Mb jpegs it times out after the first one.

Comments on the questions from konstantinos - mailnews.js sets the defaults for all profiles on the client machine - prefs.js over-rides those defaults.

Tried setting mail.imap.mime_parts_on_demand to false (using Config Ed.), closing Thunderbird, restarting and setting back to true - no difference
