No that did not help.

The problem with mouse clicks remains, also clicking the touch pad is not responded to. This is within Unity, in an app clicking works Ok i.e Firefox or VirtualBox etc.

I also cannot change the appearance even though the appearance app shows the new background.

As far as I know these are the only (smaller) problems left to deal with.
