Alecz20: that worked like a charm, great advice. I was able to install 2.6.22-14, force removal of 2.6.24-19 (had to touch and mkdir some /boot & modules directories along the way), boot into 2.6.22-14 and reinstall 2.6.24-19.

For the 2nd feisty upgrade, I just installed 2.6.22-14 after do-release-upgrade, booted into that, then went to Hardy w/o a hitch.
