I am likewise afflicted with this same problem with Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.1 Rebecca 64 bit I installed with GREAT DIFFICULTY (constant crashes or glitches requiring re-reading of the installation program) on my Dell Latitude D630 laptop which I confirmed runs the Intel Mobile GM965/Gl960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]).

The only helpful info I have discovered is that I must stick to the default mode "Run Xclient script". If I start my Dell D630 up with any other desktop option, such as Cinnamon or Cinnamon Software Rendering, or Xfce Session (I installed as an experiment) the system will sputter along miserably in fits and starts until it sooner or later crashes dead. Running under Xclient script it works tolerably well unless I use any of my browsers too much, which seem to sooner or later crash (Firefox, Opera, Chrome). Some sessions are more trouble free than others, by pure random chance.

My impression is that this is a serious problem afflicting a lot of users who have older but still very servicable and useful laptops of many popular brands, including Dell, and deserves to be forwarded to the movers and shakers at Ubuntu and Mint, and the user community.

If anyone comes up with a fix in the meanwhile, write it out in detail step by step in understandable plain English to help the rest of us. Thanks.
