Bug Description

Hi,

Thanks for all help.

>>> Lots of system output contained below <<<<

o System crashes to black screen and mouse pointer remains responsive. I have to re-boot via power off button to get back (ouch!). This is most prone when opening Firefox and sometimes Chrome. Viewing youtube video in browser can cause crash too.

o Not sure if I can re-start cinnamon as I don't know how to in this situation.

o Google reveals this 'black screen crash' is happening quite consistently for a number of people running new installs of both LM C 17.1 rebecca and recent(?) ubuntu.

o Some basic details :
Kernel: 3.13.0-37-generic i686 (32 bit, gcc: 4.8.2)
Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
Machine: System: LENOVO (portable) product: 7661CH8 version: ThinkPad T61
Mobo: LENOVO model: 7661CH8 Bios: LENOVO version: 7LET44WW (1.14 ) date: 06/27/2007
CPU: Dual core Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7100 (-MCP-) cache: 2048 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 7181.94
           Clock Speeds: 1: 800.00 MHz 2: 800.00 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) bus-I

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
shows that trusty drivers are in use... see below ..

    >>>>> Are trusty drivers for Intel GM965 graphics chip broken ? <<<<<

o Both these links suggest
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49881
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3466
installing
libgl1mesa-dri (Direct Rendering interface)
for the GM965 graphics chip.
I installed
 libgl1-mesa-dri
in the synaptic package manager, though both this and libgl1-mesa-glx now appear greyed out with an exclamation mark in the check box synaptic (post install)

Thank you

:)

Jas

Im wandering if it is flash or some other web browser component and way it
interacts with graphics card?

Its definateley more prevelant with Forefox than Chrome.

I have a linux mint 16 laptop with chrome and firefox. It never happens and
presumable all the same flash updates.

May have to try Crubchbag

Yes it seems (who actually knows until it's fixed) it is something to do with the
Intel gm965 integrated graphics chip

May be the driver did not compile correctly in the kernel or something : I was just looking at ...

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=130379
says a problem was identified with
GM965
Person then installed
xf86-video-intel
and everything else
xorg

when I searched my system for
xf86-video-intel
I only found
xserver-xorg-video-intel
the attached screenshot says this is the driver for the
i965
series chips.

I do not know if this is the correct driver and it does not work properly or it is the wrong driver.

AHHHHH i just noticed

>>>>> xserver-xorg-video-intel
is grayed out as an update available and (not) installed on the problem laptop

I selected the package and chose from the menu
Package --> Force Install

I'll let U know if it makes a difference

You any ideas ...

May be a Nvida graphics driver.
Not sure why .. may be a red herring only !

According to the forum thread I posted the bug actually exists in the ubuntu 14.04 LTS base (mint 17.1 is based on that). I can recreate the black screen on ubuntu 14.04 aswell. It is a quite big problem, but it only affects small group of people with "old" laptops that have gm965 graphics...
I dont know how to fix it bec I'm no dev.

Hi George,

Here is what I have done .... and my conclusions ... so far ...

Synaptic -->
choose
"kernel & modules"
in left menu

Here are the kernels I have just tested on the "black screen" system with results ...

Kernel = 3.13.0-37-generic
o ** Black screens at web site chrome.google.com **
o wireless mouse works
o Screen resolution sets properly at 900 pixels wide
o Wi-Fi applet on desktop works properly

Kernel = 3.13.0-39-generic & 3.13.0-40-generic & 3.16.0-28-generic ( 3 different kernels tested )
... results are the same for all three kernels ...
o ** DOES NOT ** Black screens at web site chrome.google.com **
o wireless mouse works
o Screen resolution sets properly at 900 pixels wide
o Wi-Fi applet on desktop works properly

CONCLUSION :

** 3.13.0-37-generic kernel ( as comes pre-installed with LM 17.1 Rebecca ) **

This is a highly customised kernel for and works well for Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca except some aspect in the kernel does not support the Intel GM965 chipset.

This is a critical flaw leading to Mint abandonment without a fix.

SOLUTION : some (probably) small aspect of the Intel GM965 chipset was forgotten during compiling the
3.13.0-37-generic
 kernel.
this can possibly be fixed by an appropriate dev.

Next step.

** Try and get in touch with the developers and indicate this problem **

I beleive this issue is significant becasue the GM965 is in many IBM Thinkpad T60-T61 laptops just like this one

o wireless mouse ***DOES NOT work***

Hi John

How r u ? :)

*re Linux Mint 17.1 Black screen crash*

I had not switched that machine on in ages .. though I just have.
I've applied all available updates and have just opened chrome and
www.google.com/chrome and it crashed as before.

So it seems there is no update /fix.

U could try loading Linux Mint 16?

Kind regards

A workaround is to change the acceleration mode to UXA in Xorg.conf. More precisely this means creating a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf containing:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Card0"
 Driver "Intel"
 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

I can now access the Chrome download page with hardware acceleration enabled (which was not possible before).

Does anyone know which kernel update caused the problem? I'd like to investigate it but first I need an idea of what changes might have caused it.

This bug has been there ever since the LM 17 launch (Ubuntu 14.04) . LM 16 doesn`t have this bug, it was based on Ubuntu 13.10.

I seem to have spoken too soon as regards the workaround. With acceleration on in Chrome I can cause a GPU failure even with hardware acceleration disabled (Option "NoAccel" "True" in Xorg.conf). This is really bizarre.

@Infinity: Thanks for the info. So this bug never appeared in LM 16? If that's the case then it appears to have been introduced with the major update, which may make it very difficult to track down.

I am likewise afflicted with this same problem with Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.1 Rebecca 64 bit I installed with GREAT DIFFICULTY (constant crashes or glitches requiring re-reading of the installation program) on my Dell Latitude D630 laptop which I confirmed runs the Intel Mobile GM965/Gl960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]).

The only helpful info I have discovered is that I must stick to the default mode "Run Xclient script". If I start my Dell D630 up with any other desktop option, such as Cinnamon or Cinnamon Software Rendering, or Xfce Session (I installed as an experiment) the system will sputter along miserably in fits and starts until it sooner or later crashes dead. Running under Xclient script it works tolerably well unless I use any of my browsers too much, which seem to sooner or later crash (Firefox, Opera, Chrome). Some sessions are more trouble free than others, by pure random chance.

My impression is that this is a serious problem afflicting a lot of users who have older but still very servicable and useful laptops of many popular brands, including Dell, and deserves to be forwarded to the movers and shakers at Ubuntu and Mint, and the user community.

If anyone comes up with a fix in the meanwhile, write it out in detail step by step in understandable plain English to help the rest of us. Thanks.

The workaround in #13 works but UXA really degrades performance and makes my system run hotter than the sun.

I have a problem with video on the GM965 but it did not go to black screen. Instead black bars would appear in different windows (looks like bar codes and always horizontal). This happens on multiple machines with Linux Mint 17.2 and LMDE 2. A restart of the program affected or Cinnamon (when the lines occur within Cinnamon) works but the problem is reoccurring. Attached is a screenshot of Chromium with the problem - the lines can vary in size.
The closest thing I found to my problem was this thread and the laptop I am using is a Lenovo T61 Product Name: 7661V52
as mentioned by the reporter but perhaps slightly different.
I have updated the BIOS today to 7LETD0WW (2.30 ) Release Date: 02/27/2012 and will monitor the machine to see if that solves the problem.
