Bug Description

I was looking at a directory on a fash drive that had amoung other things two jpeg2000 images (6gb each) and a bunch of pdf documents. I checked task viewer after the pc started stuttering, and it looked like tumbler had aquired 5.2gb of ram(the system has 6gb total) and the swap was 100% used. So i killed the tumbler process and the swap and ram came back... seemed like a bug.

For me this happens when I navigate to ~/Pictures folder. There's a very large .gif file there, which you can take here: http://depositfiles.com/files/vcpqmrwd4
The file is GIF country map 14983x19281, file size 128MB. So I suppose tumblerd daemon just chokes on this.

I have 1GB of memory. First memory goes up to the limit, then swap goes to 100%, it sits like this for about 2 minutes, unusable, and then back to normal.

I found an old thread here: http://mail.xfce.org/pipermail/thunar-dev/2008-February/004350.html discussing the problem, and from what I understand this is still not implemented. But if someone knows the solution (make thumbnailer ignore large pictures) this would be helpful.

For now I will just delete the file ;-)

I have the same problem when browsing folders containing videos or pictures using pantheon-files. However, rather than eating up memory, the process "tumberd" gobbles up to 100% of CPU making my laptop overheat.

I have also experinced this issue.
Using Slomovideo to render a video this sometimes happens when i have Thunar open in the output folder.

tumblerd then through a period of time it consumes all RAM all Swap and then closes (probably because the kernel sees the process going out of bounds for the memory.)

Same on 12.04.3 with tumbler 0.1.24 when thunar lists a folder with a growing video file.

There are some upstream fixes, that might address this issue (e.g. https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8094). If so, it might be worth backporting/upgrading tumbler in precise.

Still same on 22.10 while copying a 31GB file. Ate 16GB of RAM and 2 GB of swap and borked half the system while it was doing so.
